Earlier today I remembered my first political experience. I was in first grade, and it was time for the presidential election. At my elementary school, we had mock elections in each class (actually, it might have been a district-wide thing, or something). I think I'd voted for Dukakis, not Bush, because I don't remember being especially disappointed when Dukakis was announced as the winner in our class. So I guess my parents' politics never rubbed off on me. Actually, I don't think I knew they were Republicans until I was in high school, possibly even after I was registered to vote.

On another political note, New Mexico is electing a new governor this year. And all I've got to say is, the next governor better damn well be a Democrat. For one thing, I would feel better about that than having a Republican governor. And for another, I would find it easier to respect Governor Richardson than Governor Burpo. Governor Burpo? I would have to laugh.

Yeah, I voted for Dukakis in 1st grade, too. I picked him over Bush because I liked his name better. Unfortunately, North Dakota is a Republican state and Bush won in our class. That's one of the reasons I'm registered to vote in DC instead.
I just don't understand why they have mock elections in elementary schools. How many children thought long and hard about which president could best serve their 1st-grade needs? What a waste of time.
