Nov. 3rd, 2002 03:43 pmSo I went to Harvest Ball, as carbon/benzene. Whichever, both work. I stayed until the end this time. It was fun. Many crazy costumes and some bare flesh.
Pretty early on in the evening, once I got there, I'm dancing with friends, minding my own business, when this vaguely-familiar looking girl taps me on the shoulder and asks, "Are you Dawn?" Indeed. "Did you go to Academy?" Why yes I did. "I'm Amy. I went there for two years. Did you do theater?" Yes. "Were you in Darby's class?" Correct again. She then tells me in a slightly embarassed manner that she was "Crawford's girlfriend" for a while. This doesn't so much as jog my memory (I'd of course heard the random snippet about "Crawford's girlfriend" but had never but a face and real name to the moniker) as make me wonder why someone in with the popular group would come to Reed, since the majority of Reed's student body were the freaks and outsiders of the high school world. Ah, "New Reed..." Anyway, this exchange also served to shatter any illusions of my own obscurity I still harbored. I knew I hadn't achieved obscurity here at Reed when random people would ask things like, "Are you a Quest editor?" or seem to know my name without me having to tell them. And obviously I wasn't all that obscure at Academy either, if someone from two grades behind me that I was peripherally aware of can recognize me now. So much for being a small fish in a small pond. Medium fish, I guess.
Anyway, I work now. Must study genetics.
