I Swear That I Don't Have A Gun
Jun. 22nd, 2003 09:17 pmThe week passed quickly. Perhaps because I had nothing more to do than learn about Linguistics and read stuff. Otherwise, it was pretty much like the week before, until Thursday. I went to the library after class that day. The study area in the west wing of the UNM library is remarkably similar in layout to the reference room of Hauser. Minus the books and plus a lot more space, though.
Friday's class concluded with another test. I couldn't start it until about 15 minutes after test time, because the professor hadn't made enough copies of the test. But I still finished quite early. Friday night found me not at a bookstore waiting for release of the new Harry Potter book, but at Sarah's, playing anime drinking games and watching the last of the Escaflowne episodes.
Saturday afternoon I set out on a fruitless search for a copy of the new Harry Potter book, but as I happened to pick only the places that were out of copies (or had them for people who had preordered), about all I succeeded in doing that afternoon was hitting a very stupid pigeon standing in the middle of the road and obviously did not have enough sense to move quick enough. Last night I went bowling with Alanna, her sister and a bunch of her sister's friends. I broke 100 for probably the first time ever. My second game sucked a lot, though. After bowling we went to Frontier for a bit, after going to Flying Star and finding it closed.
And it is the experience in getting into the Frontier that gives this entry its name. Since last winter, they've had police there regulating entry into the restaurant after midnight. So we got there last night after midnight and had to stand in line outside the front door, waiting for the police to decide when to let people in. But then before we could go in, they asked us to take everything out of our pockets, and wanded the first people in line and checked bags of anyone who carried one. But apparently they decided to stop wanding when they got to Alanna and I, or something. Anyway, rather ridiculous, the whole thing. I can sort of understand why they do it, as last summer there was an incident involving the Frontier and a guy with a gun. But, for one thing, they didn't start with this security paranoia until several months after that, and for another, the guy was across the street with the gun and waving it at people in the restaurant, as the whole front is all windows. So, it's all just silly. It's not incredibly more likely than any other place in town to attract some crackpot with a gun.
Anyway. This morning... or afternoon, I wake up to find that my mom has started painting my bathroom. I knew she was planning to do this, but had no idea that she was going to start today, as she hadn't said anything. Finding out almost first thing in a day that I can't use my bathroom because there are dropcloths everywhere is not the most pleasant way to start a day. Yeah, I was angry. Mostly about the utter lack of communication. But, that is forgiven, because on the coffee table in the living room was a nice, shiny new copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for me. Precioussss... oh wait, I'm mixing literary references. Anyway, I haven't started it yet because I figured if I started reading this afternoon I'd be late for going to the movies. Went to see Bend It Like Beckham this afternoon, finally. Very good movie.
So I've been out being social every day this weekend. Good stuff, that. I like going to school and having a social life in addition. Especially when school takes only a few hours every day, and I've had little enough else to do such that I've been dreaming about Ling. I also have plans for weekdays this week. Social things, and being responsible type stuff. Need to register my car and apply for loan deferment. Should I have done these things earlier? The answer is nearly always yes to such questions for me.
