Curses, curses, curses, curses! Next Tuesday, Tom Shippey is giving a lecture at UNM on "What Tolkien would say to Mr. Jackson." Tom Shippey! I want to go so much that it hurts. But I can't. Because it's during my Satire class, which I can't miss because I've got to write a paper for it by Thursday and I'm having enough trouble coming up with a paper topic for Horace as it is. [insert Dean yell here]
Indo-European started off with Tolkien today, sort of a segue from the announcement about the lecture. Flyers were passed around, and they said the Hobbit Society is sponsoring. Why did I not know this? Not that I mind, because what self-respecting Tolkien geek would not want their club's name associated with a Shippey lecture? It's just that I hadn't heard a word about the lecture before today, and being an officer of a club co-sponsoring, I have to wonder how that happened.
Saw the Sea Captain today. He smiled and waved.
Also, the English Dept. secretary (?) asked if I'm an English major while I was in the computer lab. She then jabbed at the sign that says undergrads can use the lab if there are computers free and asked if I understood that and said if I was asked to leave, I'd better do it. Yes, I know that and would be perfectly willing to oblige. But, I also am rarely in the computer lab if it is full. And when I was there today, there was no one else there at all. So, I don't see what the urgency of this was, or the necessity for a slight bit of rudeness.
